Minapa Sunnundalu Recipe

Minapa Sunnundalu with Cashew and Almond

‘Minapa Sunnundalu Recipe’, the traditional sweet of Andhra is my husband’s favourite. Even my son loves it. Known as urad dal laddu (उरद दाल लड्डू) in Hindi, this black gram lentil sweet is a nutritious super-food.

As a child, to be frank, I am not that fond of this healthy sweet, but just used to eat it for the sake of my mom who is very particular about me eating that.

As my father and my sister are big fans of this great healthy food, my mother always used to keep them handy in an airtight container on the dining table so that we can just pick one and gobble it down whenever we feel like eating.

I remember my grandma sending the roasted minumulu (black gram) to my mom, which my mom used to grind along with sugar and keep ready. She then used to melt ghee and make sunnundalu whenever needed. I used to tease my sister about her cravings for sunnundalu!

Even today, I see her gobbling down one or two when she is making them for her son. Memories of my childhood surround me whenever I think of minapa sunnundalu recipe (urad dal ke laddu in Hindi).

Minapa Sunnundalu – Absolutely delicious, Nutritious Food:

Minapa Sunnundalu (మినప సున్నుండలు) are considered to be healthy for children because of their nutritious ingredients. Not like many foods, the children too just love them. They are considered to be giving wholesome nutrition.

Black gram is a pulse which is rich in potassium, iron, calcium and vitamin B. Being a pulse, it is rich in protein and the ghee that is added gives fat for the growing body of children. The sugar gives the energy i.e carbohydrate.

High levels of Protein (25g/100g), Potassium (983 mg/100g), Calcium (138 mg/100g), Iron (7.57 mg/100g), Niacin (1.447 mg/100g), Thiamine (0.273 mg/100g), and Riboflavin (0.254 mg/100g)

Coming back to our recipe, this is an updated version of those minapa sunnundalu recipe which are mainly focused to cater the nutritional needs of the children. This is a recipe that came out from my son’s unwillingness to eat soaked almonds.

As he loves sunnundalu, I thought of mixing the powdered almond to minapa sunni and make sunnundalu. My plan worked out and he loved them. Since then, in our house, sunnundalu are made up of a mixture of black gram, almond, and cashew.

The black gram that is used for minapa sunnundalu recipe can be a whole gram or skinned or skinned and split black gram. I prefer to use the skinned urad dal which is roasted. Don’t worry about the colour as the colour is diluted by cashew and almond.

This easy to make minapa sunnundalu recipe is truly a classic Andhra sweet. The delicious and mouthwatering sunnundalu will definitely increase stamina and keep your children healthy when given daily.

Notes:

* Jaggery (bellam) can also be used in place of sugar.

** You can cut down on the amount of ghee if the ghee is melted properly. The amount of ghee can be increased if you want to, but if you use too much ghee, sunnundalu will not make a round ball.

*** I cut down on the amount of sugar as I am using the nuts which are naturally sweet. If you are a person who would like to have it very sweet then you can add more sugar.

**** Roast urad dal on a low flame for the best taste of minapa sunnundalu.
